Mi Jardin Secreto Mexican Restaurant Playa Del Carmen

I still remember the first time I stepped into the hidden gem that is Mi Jardin Secreto restaurant. As an expat living in Playa del Carmen, I’m always on the hunt for the best regional Mexican cuisine. When a local friend recommended I check out this little place tucked away on a side street, I didn’t know what to expect.

But from the moment I entered beneath the unassuming archway into the charming open-air dining area, I knew I had found something special.

First Impressions of Mi Jardin Secreto

That initial arrival set the tone for the delightful dining experience to come. Despite its discreet location off Playa’s main drag, the restaurant exuded a lively yet intimate ambiance. Ethereal string lights danced overhead as couples and groups dined alfresco under the stars. Servers fluttered between tables, bearing plates that looked almost too lovely to eat. The tantalizing aromas floating from the bustling open kitchen quickened my appetite.

I had arrived just in time to catch the tail end of happy hour. The hostess greeted me with a warm smile and escorted me to a small two-top table near the bar. I settled in with a mango margarita while perusing the menu full of tantalizing Mexican fare. Appetizers like ceviche with mango and shrimp were tempting, but I didn’t want to fill up before the main event.

Things I Liked Upon Arrival:

  • Festive ambiance with string lighting overhead
  • Lively open-air setting surrounded by foliage
  • Attentive hostess and servers
  • Spot for prime people watching
  • Happy hour mango margarita
  • Appetizing menu

Experiencing Excellent Service at Mi Jardin Secreto

I didn’t have to wait long before Oliver, my server for the evening, arrived tableside for my order. He gave the menu suggestions based on what was freshest that day. I decided on the stuffed avocado to start, along with the Yucatán-style cochinita pibil. Oliver raised an eyebrow and smiled when I ordered one of their hottest salsas on the side – I liked a challenge.

While I waited, I soaked in the convivial atmosphere around me. The restaurant was now buzzing with patrons. An acoustic guitarist had set up in one corner, lending a lovely musical backdrop to the night. Families, couples, and groups of friends all shared in festive conversation that mingled with the faint notes. Servers swooped in flawlessly to take orders, deliver drinks and plates, and clear dishes without missing a beat.

Before long, Oliver returned with my starter balanced artfully on his arm. He presented the stuffed avocado like a work of art – half an avocado shell piled high with a colorful medley of juicy shrimp, tangy pineapple salsa, and micro-cilantro. It tasted as sublime as it looked. The creamy avocado against the sweet-tart salsa and plump shrimp was a brilliant combination.

Assessing the Service:

  • Knowledgeable about menu items based on freshness
  • Attentive without being overbearing
  • Efficient pacing of courses
  • Professional presentation of dishes
  • Friendly demeanor and conversational

Savoring Exceptional Cuisine at Mi Jardin Secreto

I had just finished the last morsel of avocado when Oliver swept back to deliver the main course: succulent cochinita pibil with all the fixings. He detailed the elements of the traditional Yucatecan dish for me. Slow-roasted pork shoulder marinated in sour orange juice and annatto spice until fork tender, with red onion, avocado, and fresh handmade corn tortillas on the side.

My taste buds danced at the complex symphony of flavors – savory, citrusy, herbal. Oliver wasn’t kidding about it being hot. But the tender pork cut nicely against the habanero salsa’s slow burn, followed by the cool reprieve of avo and onion. I loaded up tortilla after tortilla, savoring the interplay of textures and spices. Before I knew it, my plate was clean, with only a few streaks of vibrant red sauce left behind as evidence.

As I dabbed my lips with a napkin, the notes of Café Tacvba’s soothing “Eres” filled the air. Looking around at smiling patrons relishing their meals as I had, I felt a deep sense of warmth and contentment. In that moment, I knew Mi Jardin Secreto wouldn’t remain a secret spot for long.

My Impressions of the Cuisine:

  • Complex fusion of authentic regional flavors
  • Emphasis on quality ingredients and seasonal sourcing
  • Creative presentation that’s almost too lovely to eat
  • Innovative take on cochinita pibil – scrumptious!
  • Good variety of vegetarian and seafood options too

Enjoying Mi Jardin Secreto’s Bountiful Dessert Menu

Though completely satiated, when Oliver came around offering the dessert menu, I couldn’t possibly say no. Even the words on the page tantalized – flourless chocolate cake with chili powder, Tres Leches cake soaked in condensed milk, mango cheesecake. But what caught my eye was the regional specialty: Xpelon de Cajeta.

Oliver explained it was a ball of chilled caramel fudge coated in seasonings and seeds. The sweet-salty-spicy medley sounded like the perfect way to end this feast. Moments later, he returned with a plate bearing what looked like a truffle dusted in red and black spices. The caramel center gave way under my spoon, oozing its rich decadent sauce. Hints of cayenne and cinnamon punctuated the sugar rush. An indulgent finale to a fantastic dining experience.

Dessert Evaluation:

  • Unique regional specialty dishes
  • Intriguing flavor combinations like spicy caramel
  • Attractive plating and presentation
  • Generous portion size

The Vibe, Value, and Overall Experience at Mi Jardin Secreto

As I enjoyed that last sweet-spicy bite, I took in the atmosphere around me. The guitarist played on, but the bustling crowds had mostly dispersed to a few lingering groups like mine. Despite the late hour, nobody seemed rushed for us to pay our check and make an exit. The staff worked calmly around the patio, refreshing waters and clearing settings at a relaxed pace.

When Oliver brought out the bill, I was more than happy with the value. For exquisite dishes prepared with obvious care using regional ingredients, Mi Jardin Secreto’s prices were very reasonable in my experience. Combined with the top-notch service, cozy ambiance, and convenient central location, this restaurant offered fabulous quality for cost.

Final Impressions:

  • Warm, casual setting great for lingering
  • No pressure to rush through dining experience
  • Excellent value – high quality dishes at fair prices
  • Convenient central spot off Quinta Avenida
  • Knowledgeable, friendly service staff

As I stepped back out under the entryway arch a couple hours later, I knew Mi Jardin Secreto wouldn’t stay Mexico’s best kept dining secret for long. It has become my go-to special occasion spot – the perfect place for date nights, visiting guests, or any celebration really.

Challenges Faced Dining at Mi Jardin Secreto

While my experience at the restaurant was overwhelmingly positive, there were a few minor hiccups:

Waiting Time

  • We had a 7:30 reservation but weren’t seated until 7:45PM when another table opened up.
  • Appetizer and main course arrived fairly quickly once ordered, but a longer than expected wait for dessert (about 25 minutes).

Menu Issues

  • The menu didn’t have photos or thorough dish descriptions, making choices difficult.
  • Several items I wanted to try were crossed out as sold out or unavailable.
  • I would have liked more vegetarian/vegan options.

Billing Errors

  • We were accidentally overcharged for a round of drinks but they amended it before paying.
  • They don’t accept American credit cards so I had to get cash from the ATM.

Atmosphere Problems

  • It got very loud when live music started which made conversation difficult.
  • Mosquitos became quite bothersome as the evening wore on.
